Post & Core Treatment in Bangalore

Strengthen and restore teeth after root canal treatment at PRALASH Dermystique & Dentique, HRBR Layout. Expert post & core build-up for long-lasting crown support.

What Is Post & Core Treatment?

After root canal treatment (RCT), a tooth is often significantly weakened — much of its natural structure may have been removed to access and clean the canals. A Post & Core is an internal support system that reinforces the remaining tooth structure and provides a stable foundation for a dental crown.

A post is inserted into the root canal space to anchor the restoration. A core build-up of composite or other material then replaces the missing tooth structure above it. Together, they create a sturdy base that allows a crown to be fitted securely — restoring full function and protecting the tooth for many years.

How the Procedure Works

01
Assessment After RCT

We evaluate how much tooth structure remains after root canal treatment and determine the best post type and core material for your case.

02
Post Placement

A portion of the root canal filling is removed and the post (fiber or metal) is cemented into the prepared root canal space for anchorage.

03
Core Build-Up

Composite resin or other core material is built up around the post to recreate the coronal tooth structure needed to support a crown.

04
Crown Preparation

The core is shaped and the tooth is prepared to receive a dental crown. An impression or digital scan is taken and sent to the lab.

05
Crown Placement

The custom-made crown is cemented over the post-and-core unit, fully restoring the tooth's shape, strength and function.

Types of Post & Core Systems

Fiber Post & Core

Made of glass-fiber reinforced resin — flexible, tooth-coloured and bonds well to tooth structure. The preferred modern choice for most cases.

Metal Post & Core

Cast or pre-formed metal posts offer high strength. Suitable for heavily damaged teeth where maximum rigidity is required.

Cast Post & Core

Custom-fabricated in a lab from an impression of the root canal. Provides an exceptionally precise fit for complex or wide canal spaces.

Dowel Post Crown

An older technique where the post and crown are combined as one unit — used in specific cases with very little remaining tooth structure.

Benefits of Post & Core

Strengthens Weakened Tooth

Provides internal reinforcement for a tooth that would otherwise be at high risk of fracture after RCT.

Prevents Fracture

Distributes biting forces along the root, dramatically reducing the risk of root fracture under chewing loads.

Supports Crown Securely

Creates a stable foundation so the crown fits precisely and stays secure for many years.

Improves Durability

A post-and-core-supported crown can last 10–15+ years with good oral hygiene.

Restores Chewing Function

You can eat normally again without fear of breaking the treated tooth.

When Is It Needed?

Post & Core is recommended when:

  • Large portion of tooth structure lost to decay before RCT
  • Tooth broken below or at the gum line
  • Insufficient tooth structure to hold a crown directly
  • Molar or premolar with high biting forces
  • Root canal treated tooth to receive a porcelain or zirconia crown
  • Dentist recommends it after evaluating X-rays

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The root canal has already been completed so the tooth has no nerve. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and is generally painless. You may feel mild soreness for a day or two afterwards.

Not always. If sufficient natural tooth structure remains, a direct crown without a post may be placed. Post & core is recommended when the tooth is heavily damaged and lacks enough structure to hold a crown on its own.

Post placement and core build-up are typically completed in 1–2 visits. The crown then takes an additional 3–7 days for lab fabrication and a further appointment for final fitting.

Fiber posts are generally preferred today. They have a similar flexibility to tooth structure (reducing fracture risk), are tooth-coloured, and bond chemically to the canal. Metal posts are stronger but can cause root fractures if the post is too rigid.

With proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a post-and-core-supported crown can last 10–15 years or more. Longevity depends on bite forces, habits (like grinding) and oral hygiene maintenance.

If the dentist recommends a post & core but you skip it, the crown may lack adequate retention and the tooth could fracture under biting forces, leading to loss of both the crown and the tooth.

Fiber post & core ranges from ₹3,000–₹8,000. The crown is additional — typically ₹5,000–₹25,000 depending on material. Call +91 99005 17699 for a personalised estimate.
